The excellence of the following Treatise is so well known to all in any tolerable degree conversant with the Art of Painting, that it would be almost superfluous to say any thing respecting it, were it not that it here appears under the form of a new translation, of which some account may be expected.
Of the original Work, which is in reality a selection from the voluminous manuscript collections of the Author, both in folio and quarto, of all such passages as related to Painting, no edition appeared in print till 1651, though its Author died so long before as the year 1519; and it is owing to the circumstance of a manuscript copy of these extracts in the original Italian, having fallen into the hands of Raphael du Fresne; that in the former of these years it was published at Paris in a thin folio volume in that language, accompanied with a set of cuts from the drawings of Nicolo Poussin, and Alberti; the former having designed the human figures, the latter the geometrical and other representations.

tried to read a digital copy. It's poorly formatted, too many words run together without spaces, making it difficult to read. Was unable to finish it due to this... maybe I'll revisit it later but for now it's too much trouble; there were some helpful tidbits in what I did get through.Product details

This is the well known MacMahon edition of the codex Urbinas Lat 1270, which contains the famous Leonardo da Vinci's treatise on painting. One of this two volume set contains the fac simile of the original manuscript, so you can check the translation for accuracy on the real text (even if this text is not by Leonardo's hand, but only a XVIth copy of the lost Leonardo's manuscript).
This book contains an collection of writings by Leonardo da Vinci. It functions as a reconstruction of da Vinci's views on (the making of) art, since he planned to write a comprehensive treatise on the subject but never did. What I did miss, though, is an introduction that offers some historical background information on da Vinci and the art theory of his days, to put the whole thing into context.
Either way, the book is a very nice addition to any art historical library (right next to Alberti's and Cennini's treatises)
Well presented. However, it does not make 'light' reading. It needs to be studied and re-read sometimes, to fully understand and appreciate it's meaning. Knowledge is superb and very informative, but understanding it fully can be a burden. Cheers, H. )
Genius. In painting, and in writing.
Not so much for a how to for painting, but it does provide excellent insight into the methodology of Da Vinci, along with the psychology of his genius.
It relates to a novel I’m writing so I’m excited to read it, but can’t.
The book was sealed inbubble wrap, but it’s wet! The pages are limp and warped. I’m trying to press it beteeen slabs of stone.
Wow! To read the writings of this genius is amazing. His suggestions and ideas are presented in his own words (though translated to English from Italian.) I am thrilled to have discovered this book through another source. The book is written as Leonardo might have explained something back then. That's neat!!
